Apple has launched a lower cost $999 iMac for educational institutions. This is not available for individuals it's mean for education only.
The 21.5 inch model, with a 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core processor, AMD Radeon HD 6750 graphics with 512MB of memory, 2GB of RAM, a 250GB Hard Drive, a 'Superdrive', OSX Lion, and all the iLife stuff you get with any new Mac.
